About termites (deemak)
6 questions
What is deemak, and is it the same thing as termites?
Deemak is the Urdu word for termites. In Pakistan the damage in homes is almost always done by subterranean termites, which live in large colonies in the soil and travel up into a building to feed on anything containing cellulose: door frames, skirting, cupboards, beams, books, even paper stored in a cupboard. The colony itself is usually nowhere near the wall you can see being eaten.
Why have termites appeared in my house?
Three things bring them: soil contact, moisture and food. Older neighbourhoods with mature trees and gardens sit on soil that already holds established colonies. Newer societies built on filled land often see activity within a few years of possession because the fill carries colonies with it. A leaking pipe, a planter against an outside wall, or damp under a floor gives termites the moisture they need to keep working. None of it means your house is dirty, which is the first thing most people ask.
What are the first signs of termites in a home?
Thin lines of dried mud running up a wall, skirting or pillar are the clearest sign; that is the tunnel termites travel in. Others are wood that sounds hollow or papery when tapped, paint that bubbles or peels in patches and looks like damp, small translucent wings near windows or lights after rain, doors and windows that suddenly stick, and fine piles of what looks like soil or sawdust under furniture and door frames. Any one of these means the colony is already established, not starting.
Are termites dangerous to my family's health?
Termites do not bite people, do not sting and do not carry disease. The danger is structural and financial. They work quietly inside timber for months before anything shows on the surface, so by the time a door frame collapses or a cupboard back gives way, the repair bill is far larger than the treatment would have been.
How quickly do termites damage a house?
Slowly, and then visibly all at once. A colony can work inside a door frame or under a floor for a year or more with nothing showing outside. What people notice as a sudden problem is usually damage that has been accumulating quietly. This is why we treat a single hollow frame as a reason to inspect the whole property rather than just that one item.
Do termites stop in winter?
Activity slows in cold weather but it does not stop. Subterranean colonies live below ground where the temperature is steadier, so they keep working through the winter and simply become more visible again as it warms. In Karachi, Multan and Hyderabad, where it stays warm and humid, colonies stay active almost all year. Winter is a perfectly sensible time to treat, and it is usually easier to get a booking.
Treatment and process
7 questions
What actually happens during a termite treatment?
A trained applicator inspects the property free and maps the activity. You get the price on the spot. On treatment day the team drills small holes at set intervals along the wall and floor junction, injects the termiticide under pressure so it spreads through the soil beneath, seals every hole, and treats the external soil perimeter so new colonies cannot approach. A typical home takes four to six hours and is finished in one day. We return afterwards to confirm the treatment took.
What is the difference between colony transfer and a surface spray?
A surface spray kills the termites it touches and repels the rest, which pushes the colony to find another route into the building. The colony keeps working. A non-repellent fipronil barrier does the opposite: termites cannot detect it, so they walk through the treated soil, return to the nest and pass the active ingredient through the colony. That is what brings the nest down rather than just clearing the room.
Do we have to leave the house during treatment?
No. The product goes into soil and masonry, not into the air you breathe, and it is low-odour once dry. Most families stay home while we work. We ask that children and pets stay out of the specific room being drilled until the work in that room is finished, after which the house is used normally.
Will the drilling damage my floor, marble or tiles?
The holes are small and go in at the wall and floor junction, which is the least visible line in any room. On tiled floors we drill through grout lines wherever possible. Every hole is filled and sealed after injection, and the area is cleaned before the team leaves. On marble and specialist finishes the applicator will walk the rooms with you first and agree the drilling line before starting.
Do I need to empty the house or move furniture out?
No. You do not need to move out or empty rooms. We ask you to clear a working space of a foot or so along the walls so we can reach the floor junction, and we cover and protect the working area before starting. Heavy furniture is moved by the team and put back.
Is the treatment safe for children, pets and plants?
It is safe when it is applied correctly, which is most of what you are paying a professional for. Our applicators are trained on safe handling and follow the directions on the approved product label for every application. Keep children and pets out of the area being treated until the work there is done, and tell us in advance about aquariums, caged birds and anyone in the house who is pregnant or unwell so we can plan around them.
What is pre-construction treatment, and when is it done?
It is a soil barrier laid while the building is going up, at three stages: foundation trenches before concrete, backfilled earth around the structure, and the whole floor area before the slab is laid. The pre-flooring stage is the one most builders skip and the one that matters most. It is priced per square foot of covered area, needs no drilling or sealing later, and costs a fraction of treating the same house once it is finished. You receive a stage-wise completion certificate to hand to the owner or buyer.
Pricing and aftercare
5 questions
How much does termite treatment cost in Pakistan?
Full post-construction treatment for a typical home runs between Rs 18,000 and Rs 45,000, depending on covered area and how far the activity has spread. Furniture and woodwork treatment is Rs 6,000 to Rs 15,000 depending on the number of items. An annual pest control contract, which covers termites plus general pests across scheduled visits, is Rs 40,000 to Rs 75,000 a year. Pre-construction soil treatment is priced per square foot after a site visit. Every one of these is confirmed as a fixed price at the free inspection, so you never work from the range alone.
Is the inspection really free?
Yes. No call-out charge, no inspection fee, no obligation to book anything afterwards. A trained applicator visits, confirms whether it is termites and which species, maps how far the activity has spread, and gives you the price on the spot. If the answer is that you do not need a treatment, that is what we will tell you.
What happens after the treatment?
Every full treatment includes a follow-up visit: we come back to confirm the result and answer anything that is unclear. You keep the same number afterwards. Furniture treatment and annual contracts have their own visit schedule, stated in the quote.
Someone quoted me a few thousand rupees. Why are you more expensive?
Because of what is in the price. A very low quote usually means far less chemical than the property needs, widely spaced drilling that leaves gaps in the barrier, untrained labour, and nobody to call afterwards. It clears the termites you can see, which feels like success for a year. We would rather quote honestly for a treatment that reaches the colony and come back to check it. If money is tight, tell us: we will scope the work down to what is genuinely urgent rather than thin out the treatment.
How and when do I pay?
For treatment services, payment is due on completion of the work, in cash or by bank transfer. We do not ask for advance payment on a residential treatment before the inspection and quote.
Coverage and booking
2 questions
Which cities do you cover?
Treatment teams operate in Lahore, Karachi, Islamabad, Rawalpindi, Faisalabad and Multan, and we schedule visits to Gujranwala, Sialkot, Peshawar, Hyderabad, Quetta, Bahawalpur, Sargodha and Sahiwal. Lahore, Islamabad and Rawalpindi are usually same day; most other cities are within 24 to 48 hours.
How do I book, and how fast will you reply?
WhatsApp is the quickest route: send a photo of what you are seeing and, during working hours, you will normally have a reply in under 30 minutes. You can also call us or send the enquiry form on the contact page, in which case leave a phone number rather than only an email. We work Monday to Saturday, 9:00 AM to 8:00 PM.
Still not sure what you are looking at?
Send a photo of the wall, the frame or the furniture. We will tell you whether it is termites, how bad it looks, and what it would usually cost to fix. No charge for the answer.
